You can effectively extend a touring Europe for several days and perhaps save money. You need a Eurail pass and a little advance planning.
That’s how it works. With a Eurail Pass you can go from city to city in Europe in great comfort at a reasonable price.

The key is the term “downtown to downtown. Paris considered. The Charles de Gaulle Airport is located 23 km north of Paris. If you go by taxi in both directions, not the national debt and takes 45 minutes. There are regular buses and trains but your journey is never less than 45 minutes. Leaving, must pass through security and the airlines want you there before takeoff. At least one hour, sometimes two hours.

Thus, on each flight, you will find up to six hours, never less than four, devoted to the airport, the registration under, Travel and collecting your luggage. Then, always the center of your destination.
By train, in every capital in Europe (I have searched and found no exception) you arrive at the center of the city.

Yes, you need at the station ten minutes before the train leaves - it fifteen minutes to be on the safe side - and when your goal is the immediate arrival. Your luggage is with you and you’re there, right in the middle of the city. To test this stay in Paris for the moment.

At Easter - one of the busiest times of the year for Paris - I arrived at Gare de L’Est, one of the main stations of Paris. The station was the tourist help desk - every station in Europe has a help desk.
There I explained what I wanted - an inexpensive (like under 50 € per night) room in a hotel near Place de la Republique with a view over the rooftops of Paris. And I checked in ten minutes and went happily on my way. (Incidentally, it was the most romantic room I have ever had in a hotel somewhere in Paris and it was blooming in spring and the chestnuts and, alas, I was alone.)

On this trip I traveled from Salerno in Sicily in Italy and in France, Spain to Barcelona to ask the work of Gaudi, back to Greece, then back to Germany to Mainz. I had to cover much ground and that was the best and least expensive and most convenient way. I saved a lot of time and money.

(And if you’re interested in old motorcycles you should know that I have my birthday touring Sicily on a 350cc Royal Enfield is an exact replica of the sixties model but made in Madras. I could rent 500-cc model but thought that going a little higher).

They are to do as a rule only with relatively short trip - two hours from Paris to Lyon, Amsterdam to Cologne three hours in Geneva to Paris three years and a half hours and so on - and this joyful experience, because the trains are fast, comfortable (especially in the first class) and wonderfully quiet.

The best example of modern trains of Europe, the TGV in France, part of the network are connected € City.
I am writing this while I travel on the TGV Express - TGV stands for Train Grande Vitesse, which, roughly translated as high-speed train - from Paris to Avignon. The rest - we are running on tires - is disturbing. This is first class and there is a configuration of three seats in the car - two and one. I am the only seat that is adjustable and comfortable.

It is a table of points down on which rests my computer.
We are now choking through the suburbs of Paris at 200 miles per hour. We finally we reach cruising speed, which is over 270 miles per hour. There is no power, no rattling, without falling, without shaking.

A transfer of gentleperson for the Grand Tour in Europe.
For trains between big cities are the best of Paris high-speed trains such as the name (Ah, romance in the names) Catalan Tago, Maria Theresa, Voltaire, Leonardo da Vinci, Etoile du Nord. They are very fast and are almost never too late.

Sometimes, you will not only train at high speed, economical and comfortable transport, but at other times of the train ride to a city tour and his.
Bernina Express in Switzerland, the Bergen Express in Norway, France Loisirail examples where the journey is part of the picturesque holiday.

Important points to remember:
• Remember that the Europeans a very reasonable clock 24 hours used for this kind is called: clock five hours are 1700 hours in the evening and half past eight in the evening clock 2130th easy once you get the stroke.
• How your train, you must have validated Eurail for which you must present your passport. Do it before boarding a train at the information window of a station large enough. You will receive your return ticket and a validation slip.
• Keep away from your validation slip from the map. It provides proof of ownership. (If you are a worry wart like me, you make a photocopy of both straight away and do not forget to keep a copy in the lining of your suitcase.)
• Make sure you go to the upright. Each city has several railway stations in Europe. This hike, I TGV Gare de Lyon in Paris began. But there are six other major railway stations in the city of light. The hotel concierge will advise you.
• If you are sure the station you’re on the right platform and the right car. The signs are always clear and the railway staff are always very helpful. There is a board of directors for confirmation of the name, number and date of departure of the train at the entrance to the platform when you get there.
• First step in the right car at the right train, is of crucial importance in modern trains it is the car that is sent by computer control to its destination. On the side of each car is an identification sign that tells you the number of the car where the vehicle position and the name of the principal stations on the road. Check the Control Panel and careful if you are still in doubt, show your ticket to the driver of the train and explain exactly where you go.
• Limits. A Eurail pass is for x number of trips within a given period. Do not waste the pass on short trips.
Example: I was in Nice, Cannes and had to go. I went by train and bought a ticket. You do not waste your Eurail Pass on journeys on trips that last less than an hour.
• Ubiquity. Every station seems to have a Eurail booking desk. organized and try to book well in advance as you can if you want a sleeper. These trains will be full, especially during the holiday season, and the sooner you book, the more certain you are getting the right train.
• Sleeping on the train. If there is a very long journey on the evening train and sleep on board. On a first class Eurail tickets the sleeper is part of the package.

This has enormous benefits. It saves you the cost of one night, and it gets what could be a long journey in greater comfort and style. For example, I went from Salerno in Sicily to the leg of Italy to Genoa and did it on a night train and slept like a baby.

You must be careful.
This is the story of a passionate young couple who used their bed not sleeping. In a moment of ecstasy the young lady like crazy for the next object suspended. Unfortunately, it was the emergency communication cables.
• If possible, take your own snacks. It was a thought in my mind that food on European trains would be a gastronomic delight. In my experience, it is very far. On the other hand, are almost all station restaurants good food at very reasonable prices provided you stay away from fast food chains.
• Get the right stop. As you come into town, make sure not to increase at a suburban stop is usually to stop near the main train station. If in doubt, ask the inspector notes or custody. No need to be able to speak the language. Just show your ticket and they will tell you what to do.
• Travel light. If you are not so easy to carry with you your bags are packed. Porters do not exist. not at any station I’ve ever seen.
• Use all the shares. When planning your trip, be bold. You can go from Greece to Oslo and just about everywhere in between.
• Not in the United Kingdom. All this applies to Europe except for Great Britain. A Eurail Pass does not work there. Great Britain is not part of Europe. What do you do differently?
